Now they sleep—some deep within the enveloping earth and others beneath theeternal sea, in the drowned city of R'lyeh, preserved in the waters by the spells of mighty Cthulhu. This game comes up so often on these boards, so I have decided to take a look. Few questions. Is this the Call of Cthulhu RPG everyone speaks of? Or is there another version out there? Is there a hardcover version of this book? What other Call of Cthulhu RPG books would you advice buying for those who don't know a lot of the mythos and never read H. Lovecraft or are a good additional supplement to the game?Outside the RPG what Books would you suggest for reading the Cthulhu Mythos, I know many authors have added to the mythos. Basically a Cthulhu Mythos must have list? Thanks for any help!
This is the game. It is fantastic (at least previous versions are, I still use the 4th edition). The main book is really the only essential book. Others are helpful but it isn't quite like D&D where there are 3 core books. If you were planning on getting some other books, I would recommend grabbing a pack of adventures that sound good to you. This will help you get a feel for things. On the fiction front, there is a TON of mythos from other writers.
From Lovecraft himself I would recommend Dunwich Horror, Mountains of Madness, and Call of Cthulhu as giving a feel for the game.Be warned that there is stuff that I (and others) consider racist in Lovecraft's writing. I can look past this (while certainly not approving of it) but it is definitely there. Just another bit of advice for the Dragnmoon- read a few of Lovecraft's short stories before you try running this.
This is a system that is all about mood, and if you don't get the mood right, the mechanics will not save you.A successfully run game of CoC should completely creep your friends out.Yah, Lovecraft is racist in the sense that virtually every white American born before 1900 is racist. If you can read 19th century fiction at all, you should be fine. This guy was the no-joke-Stephen-King-acknowledged Master of Horror. If the stories don't creep you out a little bit.

Well, you probably have a Sanity Score in the low 20's:). I don't know if hardcovers exist for the sixth edition, but I own a hardcover of the fifth edition (5.6, I believe). Dunno why hardcovers of the current edition are so rare or non-existent.Edition matters very little for this game, though. Its not like D&D where lots changed in between various editions. You can grab a module writen for sixth edition CoC and run it with the first edition rules, or vice versa, with no problem whatsoever. The main book is all you need. Outside of the RPG, or even if you decide not to play the RPG, I recommend reading Lovecraft.

The story 'The Call of Cthulhu' is a great starting point, but I personally think every bit of fiction (and poetry, and a bit of non-fiction) the man wrote is worth reading.I really hesitate to recommend other autho'rs Mythos works, because it seems that very few of them 'got it.' Many turned it into a big war between good and evil entities, some left out the sense of insignificance.I just really have yet to read a non-Lovecraft story that rings true to the Mythos, at least for me.
