I'm getting very confusedabout TV and video these days.
Not long ago,it was simple. Buy a telly, plug in an aerial, switch it on and off you go. If you wanted to watchsomething later, connect up a video recorder. But I recently realised that I actually have noidea what I'm really watching when I get a raremoment to be a couch potato.I have a cable service, which is delivered to myset-top box via a mixture of fibre and metal wires. It's arriving there as multiple encrypted MPEG2data streams, whence it's decoded and unscrambledbefore being converted to the analog signal that'ssent to my TV. It's not yet connected to a digitalPVR, but my service includes a catch-up channelthat lets me watch seven days' worth of selectedcontent whenever I want.' Do you know what the DLNA certifiedsticker on a laptop means?
Me neither'But I also watch and record TV on my PC,courtesy of Vista's Media Center and a Freeviewdual tuner card. This is also an MPEG2 stream, butarrives as a digital multiplex via my normal rooftopaerial. It then goes through all sorts oftransformations before I watch it. If I had an Xbox360, I could use it as a Vista Media Center Extenderto stream live or recorded programs via a wired orwireless network around the house to anyconvenient TV set. Courtesy of a wireless AV senderdevice, I can also link up an 'orphan' TV in abedroom to watch content from either my cablebox or another Freeview box.And if I decide to burn a favourite program to aDVD for archiving, it makes my head hurt justthinking about the number of times the digital bitsit contains have been massaged, manipulated, converted and repackaged. It's a minor miracle thatanything comes out of the other end at all.Add in the web, and things now start to getreally complicated. Go the BBC's iPlayer, Joost,Channel 4's 40D service or any other IPTV service, and you can watch time-shifted programs streamedor by downloading them to your PC (in theobligatory DRM-protected WMV format, of course).I could then stream that downloaded contentaround my house if I wished, using WindowsMedia Connect or various other streaming AVplayers, as long as they support the file formats. But the big problem with all this is that, withoutdoing a lot of research, I have very little idea ofwhat hardware and software will work with thisproliferation of content types and data streams.
Ifmy streaming device can't connect to or play myfiles on the PC, who do I blame?Of course, that's what standards were inventedfor, but in the home media network market we'replagued with a proliferation of these, none ofwhich are really understood or explained. Do youknow what the DLNA Certified sticker on a laptopis supposed to mean? Pengertian senyawa organik. Me neither, at least until Iread this month's feature on page 44 that attemptsto clarify the current mishmash of standards.
